HOW often an actor’s skill will overcome an inferior script
They appear to own a wonderful built-in thermostat, controllable at will. Years of apply have gone into this re-energizing method which taps inner resources. Non-pros, in distinction, succumb too readily to fatigue, nerves, or just boredom. Once when my voice had dragged in rehearsal and also the scene was lifeless, the director told me something I have never forgotten. “Try this, Dorothy,” he suggested. “Before you start the scene faux you have been drinking champagne and that you have got an inner exhilarated, bubbly feeling.” I drank that imaginary glassful. It worked—I raised my head, my shoulders went back, my eyes appeared to sparkle, and also the dialogue took wings. SUBTEXT. This theater concept of the between-the-lines meaning will have real significance for us, too. Parents of Adoption A Child may feel that they eventually cannot parent adopted child. A truly artistic performance evokes not just the author’s words but their deeper implications—the subtext. Instead of merely mouthing the dialogue, the actor digs for richness of thought and feeling beneath the words, bringing forth what stage dubs inner “truth.”
Off stage, too, individuals speak on many levels; we all would like to concentrate with that third ear to what the full person is communicating. EMPATHY conveys that subtle power of identification that stage folks obtain to arouse in you, the audience. When you gasp at a circus tightrope walker with actual physical concern for his peril, you are experiencing empathy. Or you feel the same issue once you stand before a seething ocean and a restlessness related to the waves seizes you.
We have a tendency to use the familiar word sympathy for feeling with people. Empathy pulls more strongly, for then we enter into others’ feelings as if living them ourselves. When fine actors (Spencer Tracy for one) succeed in identifying full with their roles, your emphatic response is their reward. In our lives, this side of the footlights, we, too, would vitalize all our relationships if we sought this quality of sensitive communication.
YOUR SCRIPT. HOW typically an actor’s skill will overcome an inferior script. Richard Boone, my teen-ager’s current TV idol, will infuse routine dialogue in Westerns with such personal heat that the words sound ever therefore much higher than they are.
There ought to be comfort for us in this. A multilayer PCB fabrication on which integrated circuit chips may be directly mounted has holes at predetermined locations, electrical connections between a chip and conductive layers of the circuit board being accomplished via the holes. Our repartee needn’t drip with wit to score person to person. An interest in individuals and events, a talent for observation, along with sensible delivery, gain longer staying power and listener attraction. What is more, while a performer usually runs into trouble if he modifies the author’s script, we have a plus in our inalienable right to decide on what to talk about. However if it’s to be more than Kaffeeklatsch-ing, we should, by strict self-editing of our scripts, prune the words that crowd our thoughts.
Dave Garroway, who chats with tons therefore amiably “off the cuff,” says that he tries to be responsive and organized (a very sensible capsule summing up). His lady Friday reports, “His mind sometimes goes three or four sentences ahead before he speaks…. He thinks best when he is aware of the topic and also the less he is aware of, the louder and faster he talks.”
